Hey you, stop ruminating. Try free-writing
Free therapy with yourself just might help clear your head
Today, before daybreak, I collected 1400 words on my screen.
Some call it the 5am writer’s club. And for the first time, I saw the appeal.
I stretched out of bed before 5am. 🌜
And couldn’t think of anything better to do than clear my thoughts on the keys.
Writing is a powerful thing.
The best part is that anyone can do it.
You don’t need any special abilities or training.
You can just…write. About anything, anywhere.
It’s accessible. It’s beautiful.
It’s free fucking therapy with yourself.
And I think that’s really what drew me into writing in the first place.
I’m a fast typer. 💻
I write online for a living, so I'd hope so.
When I type, my fingers can spit out thoughts nearly as fast as I produce them.
When I journal, I can’t do that. So a lot of nuances are lost along the way.
It doesn’t feel as freeing. 🦅
At times, it can be stifling because I can’t get everything out as fast as I think it.
When typing, I shoot the words out precisely how I hear them in my head.
So my writing voice is authentic to me. I write how I speak.
When we write, something happens inside our brains.
You give yourself permission to think without rumination.🤸🏼
Because as soon as you think a thought, you can let it go and move on to the proceeding one.
Because everything prior has been documented, there isn’t a reason for you to fear losing that thought forever.
Sometimes, when I can’t get something out of my head, I ruminate the fuck out of it.
Play out different scenarios. Most don't even make sense. I drive myself nuts.
Now, I’ve trained my brain to stop and just write about it.✍️
I'm able to remove myself from the toxic cycle of overthinking more often.
Fewer useless thoughts live rent-free in my head for an unnecessary period of time.
I wish others would do the same. I think we would all find more peace.
When I write, the world around me makes sense.🌍
I am able to find more grace with humanity. I see the world through kinder eyes.
I forgive myself for all the helplessly silly things I’ve done.
Everyone should sit down and write from time to time.
I’m biased, so I’d say every single day.
Folks often tell me,
"I have nothing to write about. I have nothing to say."
That isn’t true.
You just haven’t truly given yourself permission to say it in written form.
So today, I invite you to sit down to write. You can journal. You can type.
Just write about your day. Your passing thoughts. Your worries.
What you see in the world around you.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll feel the sweet release of getting the heaviest of weights off your shoulders.🏋️
Will you write today?
