When things don’t feel quite right in life, we seek to change them. It could be a job, a person who doesn’t fit as they once did, or a lifestyle change that must be put into place out of necessity.
We have trouble as the majority checking in on our bodies. Coming back to ourselves and asking what it is we truly need on a moment-to-moment basis.
Life passes by rather quickly. And we get stuck on the hamster wheel of go, go, go. It is less often that we take the time we need to restore our humanity and spirit and just slow down.
I’m a chronic go-er. Time and time again I find myself working that hamster wheel, no matter what I do.
Yes, it’s how I was wired. I’m a native New Yorker, after all. Yes, I know it’s impermanent and I am in charge of myself. Easier said than done. Maybe you can understand that.
And then, when I finally take the time to sit down, slow my mind, and stop obsessing over productivity, I fall to the other side of the spectrum…borderline laziness.
I don’t feel like doing anything except taking care of myself and being selfish for a little while.
Sitting in the sun with eyes closed and deep breaths. Practicing every skin regimen in the book to address my fatigue and take some time to take care.
So finding a happy medium and balance in life is challenging. No one is perfect. We are human after all.
But when you take the time to decide what you want your future self to look like, feel like, operate like, you have a choice. As a matter of fact, you have at least a million choices per day that will affect your future self, five, ten, or fifteen years from this moment.
But a lot of people don’t want to view life that way.
We fear change
Change is inevitable. Nothing will stop it. No matter what we do. No matter how hard we try. Lots of people openly fear change. They even discuss it often. Having a regular routine brings great comfort to our lives that can at times be a whirlwind.
Managing work, a budget, eating well, keeping a tidy home, personal hygiene, and tending to ailments…not to mention those who take care of tiny humans!
We have a lot on our plates. We wear many hats on a daily basis. And change can often slow us down because it disrupts us in an unfavorable way.
But we don’t need to fear change. Especially because more often than not, change happens without our approval.
An untimely death or sickness. Anything can happen. No one is immune to change.
How can we stop fearing change?
We can live in the moment of now. It isn’t easy but you can slowly train yourself to do this.
When I find myself disconnecting from my body, I resort to taking better care.
Then I can enjoy the moment.
When we feel sick, tired, and drained, we cannot live in the present. We are concerned and preoccupied with tending to our ailments. It is the immediate priority. Nothing else matters but getting better.
We can reframe how we view change. Change can be seen as a new life opportunity. A novel journey and path that can lead us to the wildest destinations and experiences.
We can trust ourselves more and remember that no matter what life throws our way, it will always work itself out. Trauma, catastrophe, and disaster won’t dissipate overnight. But there are tangible tools to help us cope with life’s trials and tribulations.
So tell me, how do you view change?
